Introducing the Reliable Business Network

Introducing the Reliable Business NetworkAs applications evolve and emerge, the network must adapt to ensure seamless support for strategic business objectives.  By extending reliability, network control and scalability from the data center to the wiring closet to create a unified network fabric, enterprises can gain the flexibility that is required to ensure the network is application ready.  With this built-in flexibility, enterprises can truly leverage their networks as strategic assets

Korean National Supercomputing Center Relies on Force10 Networks to Build One of the World’s Largest Supercomputers

KISTIThe Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), Korea’s national supercomputing center, has deployed the Force10TeraScale E-Series® family of switch/routers and the S2410 data center switch to build a massively parallel processing (MPP) supercomputer with a peak performance of 250 Teraflops or 250 trillion calculations per second.

“KISTI is focused on becoming a world leader in science and technology by building a next generation supercomputing platform capable of exploring the new frontiers of technology, discovery and international cooperation,” said Ki-Seong Yu, director of the Network Infrastructure Group at the KISTI Supercomputing Center.  “To be a recognized leader in supercomputing science, we require a networking architecture built for uncompromised high performance and reliability, and Force10 provides us with that.”

PetroChina Deploys Force10 Networks to Increase Efficiency of Oil and Gas Exploration

E-SeriesPetroChina has deployed the Force10 TeraScale E-Series family of switch/routers and S50 access switches to build a high performance network that will increase the efficiency of its oil and gas exploration operations.  The Force10 solution provides PetroChina with the reliability, network control and scalability it needs to fully leverage its network as a strategic asset.

“Much of our success in oil and gas exploration is predicated upon how consistently we are able to quickly, efficiently and inexpensively process and analyze seismic data,” said Mr. Yajun Jia, chief engineer and director of the Institute of Geo-Physics and Exploration at PetroChina.  “Force10 delivered a solution that was tailored to the individual needs of our data centers and provides the solid network performance we require to efficiently analyze data between our six regional data centers.”

German Research Center Deploys Force10 Networks in World’s Second Largest Supercomputer

IBM BlueGene

German research center Forschungszentrum Jülich has deployed the Force10 TeraScale E-Series family of switch/routers to power the second largest supercomputer in the world. The Force10 TeraScale E-Series is part of Forschungszentrum Jülich’s newest IBM BlueGene supercomputer and delivers the reliability and scalability that are crucial to optimizing computing power for advanced research needs.

“With our new BlueGene supercomputer, we are providing scientists throughout Europe with leading edge computing capabilities for computer simulations in a wide range of scientific areas," said Professor Dr. Dr. Lippert, head of the Forschungszentrum Jülich.  “The Force10 E-Series switch can very efficiently support the 208 Ten Gigabit Ethernet ports we require to run the supercomputer and connect to our other systems.”

Benchmarking Uptime for Your Business: Methodology and Best Practices
As the network becomes increasingly critical to business, downtime can cause a major disruption the business with the severity of the loss depending on the operations affected by the outage.

A network that is 99.99 percent available clearly has more value than one with 99 percent availability, but how much more the additional availability is worth depends on the individual business.  Modeling the impact of network downtime on the business and the availability provided by various network designs allows a business to optimize the tradeoffs between reliability and network investment.
