Force10 Networks Introduces Unified Operating System across Product Portfolio to Lower Total Cost of Owning and Operating Networks

Force10 Networks’ modular operating system FTOS™ is now available across its Reliable Networking portfolio of switch/routers, bringing consistency, stability and flexibility to the enterprise network. With support for a common interface across the TeraScale E-Series, C-Series and S-Series, Force10 is enabling customers to reduce their total cost of ownership by simplifying management, reducing unplanned downtime and optimizing application availability.
“With new users joining every day and a commitment to developing new applications that increase our ability to make good matches, our network needs to be flexible and easy to manage,” said Cyrus Mohit, manager of data center operations at eHarmony. “With FTOS as the common operating system across the Force10 E-Series and C-Series, we not only have a single, reliable code running on our switches but managing the network, from troubleshooting to software upgrades, is much easier, leaving more resources dedicated to enhancing our users’ experience.”

FTOS: A Modular Switch/Router OS Optimized for Resiliency & Scalability
As Ethernet switch/routers continue to scale in terms of link speed and port density, device resiliency is becoming an indispensable system attribute. For example, high degrees of traffic aggregation mean that even short periods of interrupted operation can disrupt a large number of traffic flows and users, potentially violating numerous SLAs.
The best approach to maximizing the reliability, resiliency and stability and stability of switch/routers involves the application of sound design principles:
- Eliminating single points of failure in as many system components as possible, including both hardware and software
- Constraining any failures that do occur to only one system component or subsystem
- Ensuring that when a subsystem fails, becomes compromised, or needs updating, the recovery can be accomplished quickly without disrupting the continued operation of the overall system
- Minimizing the number of operating systems, code branches and releases in development across product lines

Force10 Networks Expands C-Series Family of Resilient Switches to Bring Data Center Reliability to the Enterprise Network
Force10 Networks recently introduced the C150 resilient switch and a high density 8-port line-rate 10 Gigabit Ethernet line card to provide enterprises with the level of reliability traditionally found in high performance data centers. As an expansion of the C-Series family of switches, the C150 delivers the reliability, network control and scalability that enterprises require to support existing business critical applications today as well as emerging applications in the future.
“The ability to easily port FTOS to new platforms enabled us to rapidly bring the C150 to market and provide enterprises with a product portfolio that can be optimized to meet the specific requirements of our diverse enterprise customers,” said Sachi Sambandan, vice president of engineering at Force10 Networks. “With the E-Series, C-Series and S-Series, Force10 is delivering consistent network reliability and predictable performance from the data center core to the wiring closet, enabling enterprises to leverage their networks as strategic assets.”

eHarmony Expands Force10 Networks Deployment with C-Series Resilient Switch to Support Business Critical Operations
eHarmony has deployed the C300 resilient switch to support business critical operations without impacting the performance of its online relationship service. With the C300, eHarmony extends an earlier deployment of the Force10 TeraScale E-Series® that powers its 24x7 applications, including its signature relationship service.
“The C300s complement the core switching functionality of the E-Series by enabling us to cost effectively add more network ports in addition to another layer of redundancy,” said Cyrus Mohit, manager of data center operations at eHarmony. “The line-rate, non-blocking performance of the Force10 C300 has allowed us to conduct bandwidth-intensive, business critical operations without impacting the applications that require 24x7 availability.”
